About This Treatment
This set was created by our nailist Nami at lull. in Harajuku. The menu was Full Design Light, applied directly onto natural nails with no removal beforehand. Two extensions were added as an option. The client visiting us was from the United States.
Design Highlights
Because the nails were bare at the start, the base went straight onto the natural nail surface, which keeps the overall thickness down and lets the design sit close to the nail.
The two extensions are the structural point of this set. Rather than lengthening every finger, only two nails were built out, which evens up the line of the fingertips when the hand is seen from the front. Nails that are shorter or a different shape than the rest can be brought up to match, so the set reads as one continuous design instead of ten separate ones. The extended tips were shaped to follow the natural nails beside them, then finished with the same design across the full set.
The Visit
The client is currently studying at a university here in Japan and will be in the country until December, so this set was made with everyday student life in mind rather than a one-off holiday look.
She changed her mind about the menu partway through the booking, and the new plan was completed within the original appointment time. She left looking genuinely pleased with the result.
Care and Styling Notes
Full Design Light is a good fit if you want a design across all ten nails without a long sit-down. Applying onto bare nails — with no previous gel to remove — also shortens the appointment, so it suits people who are working a trip or a class schedule around their booking.
A few general notes on living with gel and partial extensions:
- Most gel sets hold their look for around three to four weeks. As the natural nail grows, a gap appears at the base — that is the usual signal to book a fill or a new set.
- Extended nails take more leverage than your own nail length does. Opening cans, prying lids or using nails as tools is where breaks tend to start.
- Cuticle oil once or twice a day keeps the skin around the nail from drying out and helps the edge of the gel stay flush.
- Wearing gloves for washing up and cleaning reduces how much hot water and detergent reach the seal.
- When it’s time for a change, have the gel removed at a salon. Peeling it off takes layers of your natural nail with it.
Partial extensions like these are worth asking about if one or two nails are shorter, bitten down or growing out unevenly and you’d rather not wait for them to catch up.
A Note from the Nailist — Nami
Switching the menu mid-appointment usually means rethinking the order of work on the spot. Here it meant deciding early which two nails to extend, getting those built and shaped first, then bringing the design across all ten so nothing looked added on at the end. Working on bare nails helped — there was no removal step eating into the time.
Students in Tokyo for a semester often want something that lasts through exams and part-time shifts, and that is the kind of set this turned out to be.
