A Fill-In Base with Art on All Ten Nails | Gel Nail Design in Harajuku

About This Treatment

Mami was in charge of the set from start to finish.

Design Highlights

Full Design Light covers all ten nails with art, kept at a scale that stays wearable day to day.

The fill-in method shaped the whole process. Instead of taking the gel down to bare nail, the sound base layer stays in place. Only the lifted edges and the regrown area near the cuticle are refined, then the surface is rebuilt so it sits flush. Done well, there is no ridge where the old and new gel meet, and the free edge keeps the same thickness as the rest of the nail.

That flat, even base is what lets the art sit cleanly. Color goes on without a step at the cuticle line, and the finish reads as one continuous surface rather than a layer stacked on top of another.

A Note from the Visit

Our guest teaches English in Ehime, so this was a trip up to Tokyo rather than a first landing in Japan. Somewhere between the base work and the art, the conversation turned to ENHYPEN and stayed there for a good while. She looked genuinely pleased with the finished set.

Care and Style Notes

A few practical points about fill-ins, for anyone considering one:

  • Why choose it: the natural nail plate is filed far less than with a full removal each time. Over months of continuous gel wear, that difference adds up.
  • Timing: roughly three to four weeks is the usual window. Coming in before lifting spreads under the base is what keeps the fill-in possible — once moisture gets underneath, a full removal is the safer call.
  • Daily care: cuticle oil once or twice a day keeps the regrowth area flexible. Gloves for dishwashing and cleaning, and no using nails as openers or scrapers.
  • Who it suits: people who wear gel year-round and want to protect their natural nails, and anyone who prefers a slim, low-profile finish at the cuticle.

For visitors on a short stay, a full design like this travels well — there is nothing bulky to catch on bags or clothing.

Mami’s Comment

Talking about ENHYPEN while working on someone’s nails makes the two hours go fast. We compared notes on songs and performances, and I think we both lost track of time a little.

On the technical side, the part I paid most attention to was the seam. With a fill-in, the join between old and new gel can show as a faint line under the light if you rush the buffing. I checked it from a few angles before moving on to color. Thank you for coming all the way to Harajuku.
