Fill-In Base with a Single Extension | Custom Full-Design Nails in Harajuku

About This Treatment

This set was done by Mami at our Harajuku studio. The menu was Full Design Custom, with the removal handled as a fill-in rather than a complete take-off. One nail was extended during the session. The guest visiting us was from France.

Design Points

The starting point here was the fill-in. Instead of removing everything down to the natural nail, the existing base was kept and only the grown-out area near the cuticle was refilled, so the structure built up over previous visits stays intact. On top of that base, the whole set was designed as a custom piece rather than a single flat color.

One nail was extended to bring the length line back into balance with the other nine. Length differences across ten fingers are surprisingly visible from the front, and evening them out changes how the whole hand reads before any color is applied. That correction was done first, then the design was built over the corrected shape so the artwork sits evenly across the set.

A Visit to Remember

Our guest was French and had lived in Japan for eight years, and the whole appointment ran in Japanese. That made the consultation easy — small distinctions about shape and finish that usually need a bit of back-and-forth were settled quickly. She looked genuinely pleased when she saw the finished hands, which is always the part of the day we remember.

Care and Style Notes

A few notes on fill-ins, since it is a menu that not everyone is familiar with.

A fill-in refills only the regrowth area while keeping the existing base layer, so the natural nail is filed far less than it would be with a full removal every time. For anyone who repeats gel year-round, that difference adds up. It also tends to shorten the appointment compared with a full off-and-rebuild.

The usual cycle is around three to four weeks. Past that point the regrowth gap widens, the balance point of the nail shifts forward, and lifting becomes more likely. Cuticle oil once or twice a day keeps the sidewalls and the regrowth area flexible, which helps the edge of the base stay put. Avoid using your nails to open cans or pry things — extended nails in particular take stress at the stress point rather than the tip.

Fill-ins suit people who keep gel on continuously and want to protect the natural nail plate, and anyone who prefers a shorter chair time at each visit. If your nails have grown out unevenly, adding a single extension to one finger is a normal part of the process and does not require rebuilding the whole set.

A Word from Your Nail Artist

Mami: The interesting part of a session like this is that you are working on top of someone’s history. The base already carried the shape and curve from earlier visits, so the job was to read what was there, refill the gap cleanly, and rebuild one nail so nothing looked out of place. Doing the design afterwards is the fun part, but the set only looks right if that groundwork is straight.
