About This Treatment
The menu for this visit was Full Design Light, with Mami in charge from start to finish. The guest came in from Germany and arrived with bare natural nails, so no removal step was needed — the session began straight from prep. No extensions were added; the design was built on her own nail length.
Design Highlights
Full Design Light is a full-surface design menu, meaning every nail gets artwork rather than just one or two accent fingers. Because the base here was untouched natural nails, Mami could work directly on a clean, even surface — the color sits flush from cuticle to tip with no ledge, and the finished shape follows the guest’s own nail line instead of an extended one.
Working on ten nails in one design also lets the balance be planned across both hands, so the set reads as one piece when the hands are placed side by side rather than ten separate ideas.
A Note From the Visit
She had landed in Japan that same day. A nail appointment on day one is a bold way to open a trip, and she arrived with plenty of energy for it.
Somewhere in the conversation, Netflix came up — she had discovered the TV at her accommodation and had been completely absorbed in it. A very reasonable way to spend a first evening after a long flight, jet lag and all.
She looked genuinely pleased with the finished set, which is the best sign a design can get from a guest in her late teens who has an entire trip ahead of her.
Care and Style Notes
A few practical points about full-design gel on natural nails:
- Wear time. Gel on natural nails generally holds around three to four weeks, depending on how fast your nails grow and how much you use your hands. Travelers often find it lasts the length of a two-to-three week trip comfortably.
- Daily care. Cuticle oil once a day keeps the skin around the nail from drying out, which is what usually makes a set look worn before the gel itself fails. Hotel air conditioning and airplane cabins both dry hands out quickly.
- What not to do. Don’t peel or pick at a lifting edge. It takes the top layer of your natural nail with it. If something catches, file the snag smooth and have it removed properly.
- Removal. Gel needs to be filed and soaked off, not pulled. Book a removal at a salon when you get home, or come back to us if you’re still in Tokyo.
- Who it suits. Full-surface design works well if you want every nail to count — good for a trip where you’ll be photographing your own hands constantly, and a straightforward option for anyone getting gel for the first time, since there’s no extension length to get used to.
Comment From Mami
Doing someone’s nails on their first day in a new country is a slightly different job. There’s no “how has your trip been” yet — everything is still ahead of them. So I focused on making the set something she wouldn’t get tired of looking at over the following weeks, since she’d be seeing it in every photo she takes here.
She was easy to work with and clear about what she liked. Enjoy the rest of Japan — and maybe leave the hotel TV alone for a night or two.
