About This Treatment
- Nail artist: Nami
- Menu: Full Design Light, including removal of the previous soft gel
- Guest: a visitor from the United States
The appointment began with taking off the existing soft gel, then moved straight into a new full design across all ten nails.
Design Highlights
Full Design Light means every nail gets its own design rather than a single repeated color. Nami built the look nail by nail, balancing the set so the hands read as one piece when the fingers are together.
Because the previous soft gel was removed first, the base was reset before anything new went on. That step matters more than it sounds: an even, well-prepped surface is what keeps a full design sitting flat and looking crisp at the cuticle line.
No extensions were added this time, so the shape and length stayed as the natural nails allowed.
A Note From the Visit
Our guest runs a nail salon of her own back in the States, and the chair conversation quickly turned shop talk. Hiring — finding people, keeping people, training them — came up right away, and it turns out the challenges sound almost identical on both sides of the Pacific.
From there we got onto Gen Z in America, how the generation approaches work, and what that means for a small salon owner. Being a Mexican-American business owner in the nail industry gave her a perspective we don’t often hear in Harajuku, and the hour went fast. She looked genuinely pleased with the finished set.
Care and Styling Notes
A few practical points on this kind of service:
Removal first, always. Soft gel should be filed down and soaked off properly rather than picked or peeled. Peeling takes layers of the natural nail with it, and that thinning shows up in the next set.
Expected wear. Gel over natural nails generally holds for around three to four weeks. After that, growth at the cuticle becomes visible and the balance of the design shifts, which is the usual signal to come back in.
Daily habits. Cuticle oil once or twice a day keeps the surrounding skin flexible and helps prevent lifting at the edges. Gloves for dishes and cleaning products also extend the life of the set noticeably.
Who it suits. Full Design Light works well if you want each nail to carry something different without committing to a heavy, three-dimensional set. It’s a good fit for travellers too, since the finish stays manageable through a trip and doesn’t catch on bags or clothing.
From Nami
Doing nails for someone who does nails is a particular kind of appointment. You know they’re reading the prep, the cuticle work, the curing — all of it — even while talking about something else entirely.
What stuck with me was how similar our daily problems are. I’d assumed running a salon in the US was a different world, but the staffing questions she described could have come from a conversation in Tokyo last week. Not the exchange I expected from a Full Design Light booking, and one of the more useful ones I’ve had this year.
