Fill-In Refresh on a Single-Shade Gel | One Color Nails in Harajuku

About This Treatment

  • Nailist: Mami
  • Menu: One Color, with the existing gel removed and rebalanced using the fill-in method
  • Guest: a visitor from the United States

Design Highlights

The finish is a single shade carried across all ten nails, rebuilt with a fill-in rather than a full removal. With fill-in, the base layer that is still firmly attached stays on the nail, and only the lifted areas and the regrown space near the cuticle are addressed. The new material is blended into the existing surface so there is no step or ridge where old meets new.

Because the base stays intact, the thickness stays low and even from one nail to the next, and the curve along the cuticle line follows the shape of the nail rather than sitting on top of it. The top surface is levelled before the final gloss, so light runs across the nail in one clean line.

Guest Story

Our guest is from the United States and has been living in Japan for eight years, teaching English at a kindergarten. She looked genuinely pleased when she saw the finished set.

Care and Style Notes

Fill-in is a maintenance method for people who come back on a regular cycle. Since the attached base layer is kept, the natural nail is filed far less often than with repeated full removals, and the surface underneath tends to stay more consistent over time.

A typical interval is around three to four weeks, depending on how fast your nails grow. The main thing that shortens the life of a fill-in set is picking or prying at a lifted edge — once the base is disturbed, the next fill-in has less to build on. Cuticle oil once a day and gloves for dish washing and cleaning go a long way.

A one color finish suits anyone who needs nails that stay neat in a work setting, and it is also the easiest design to carry over month after month, since each fill-in simply extends what is already there.

A Note from Mami

With fill-in, most of the work happens before any colour goes on. I check each nail for lifting, take the surface down where it needs it, and make sure the old and new layers meet at the same height. If that groundwork is off, you see it later as a line across the nail. Keeping ten nails matched in thickness is the part I spend the most time on, and it is what makes a single shade look clean.
