About This Treatment
This set was created by our nailist Mami at lull. in Harajuku. The menu was Accent Design, which covers art on up to six nails, and the work started on the guest’s natural nails — no removal or rebalance of previous gel was needed. Our guest was visiting from the United States. No extensions were added, so the finished length follows her own nails.
Design Points
Accent Design is built around contrast. Instead of repeating the same art across all ten fingers, the detail is concentrated on selected nails, while the remaining ones carry a simpler finish that supports the artwork rather than competing with it. Placement matters as much as the art itself: how the accent nails are distributed across both hands decides whether the set reads as balanced or lopsided when the hands are seen together.
Starting from bare nails also changes the process. The surface is prepped and the base is built up from zero, so the layers stay thin and the art sits flat against a clean foundation. On natural-length nails, this keeps the finish light to wear while still allowing the accent nails to stand out.

About Her Visit
Our guest came to us from Hawaii. She spoke softly and kept an easy, unhurried pace through the appointment, and the whole session ended up being genuinely fun on our side of the table too. She looked delighted when she saw her hands at the end.
Care and Style Notes
Gel on natural nails generally holds around three to four weeks, with regrowth at the cuticle usually becoming visible before the surface itself shows wear. A few habits extend that window:
- Apply cuticle oil once or twice a day. Dry skin around the nail is the most common starting point for lifting.
- Wear gloves for dishwashing and cleaning. Repeated hot water and detergent shorten the life of the base layer.
- Don’t use your nails as tools — opening cans or peeling stickers puts stress right at the free edge.
- If a corner does lift, leave it alone rather than picking. Pulling gel off takes natural nail layers with it.
Accent Design suits people who want visible nail art without committing every nail to it. It works well for travelers, since the appointment is shorter than a full art set, and it stays comfortable in professional settings where a full ten-nail design might feel like too much. It’s also a good option if you want to try hand-painted work for the first time and see how it wears.
A Word from Mami
With accent work, most of the thinking happens before the brush touches the nail — which fingers carry the art, and how much space to leave around it. Working on bare nails gave me a clean start for that, and it was an enjoyable set to build. Thank you for spending part of your Tokyo trip with us.
