About This Treatment
This set was done at lull. in Harajuku by our nailist Mami. The menu was Full Design Light, with the previous gel removed using the fill-in method before the new design was built. The guest visited us from the UK.
Design Highlights
Pink was the starting point and the finishing point. Mami worked within a pink range rather than pairing it with a contrasting colour, so the ten nails read as one continuous tone story instead of separate accent nails. Because the fill-in method keeps the existing base layer in place, the surface stayed level and thin at the cuticle, which lets a soft pink sit evenly without looking thick or cloudy. The gel was cured to a smooth, glossy finish that follows the natural curve of each nail.
Guest Story
Our guest is currently living in Japan while her husband works here, so this was a salon visit fitted into everyday life rather than a one-off holiday treat. She told us straight away that pink is her colour, which made the direction easy to settle on. She looked genuinely pleased with the finished set — the kind of reaction that tells you the shade was the right call.
Care and Styling Notes
Fill-in is a removal and rebase approach where the base layer is left on the nail and refined instead of being taken off completely. It reduces repeated filing on the natural nail, and because less bulk is added each time, the sidewalls and cuticle area stay slim. A gel set finished this way generally holds for around three to four weeks before regrowth becomes visible.
A few things help it last:
- Apply cuticle oil daily, especially in dry or air-conditioned rooms
- Use gloves for washing up and cleaning products
- Avoid using your nails as tools to open or pry things
- Book your next visit while the base is still sound, so it can be reused rather than removed
This style suits anyone who wants colour on every nail but prefers a calm, all-over look. It also works well for people based in Japan long-term or returning regularly, since the fill-in cycle is designed around repeat visits.
A Comment from the Nailist
Mami: “When someone names one colour they love, my job is to find the version of it that suits their hands. Pink covers a huge range — some lean grey, some lean coral — so I picked a tone that stays soft under Tokyo daylight and doesn’t fight with skin colour. Keeping the layer thin with fill-in also matters here: a single-colour set shows every bump, so a flat, even surface is what makes it look clean. I’d love to see how it wears and adjust the shade next time.”
