Accent Points on Select Nails Over a Fill-In Base | Gel Nail Art in Harajuku

About This Treatment

  • Nailist: Mami
  • Menu: Accent Design (up to 6 nails), with a fill-in for the removal and rebooking step
  • Guest: a visitor from France

The appointment took place at lull. in Harajuku, and the session was carried out in English.

Design Highlights

Accent Design places art on selected nails rather than on all ten. Up to six nails carry the detail, and the remaining nails are finished to sit quietly alongside them. The balance of which fingers get the art matters as much as the art itself — placement is decided while looking at the hand as a whole, so the eye moves across the set instead of stopping on one spot.

The base for this set was built with a fill-in. Instead of taking everything back to the bare nail, the existing gel foundation stayed in place and only the grown-out area was refined before the new design went on. That keeps the surface level and the apex consistent from one visit to the next.

Guest Story

Our guest came in from France, and the whole appointment ran in English with her own French accent colouring it. Nail talk works well across accents — pointing, swatches and a quick check in the mirror fill in whatever words don’t. She looked genuinely delighted when the set was finished and she turned her hand over under the light.

Care and Style Notes

A fill-in is worth knowing about if you wear gel regularly. Because the sound, intact base layer is kept and only the regrowth area is prepped, the natural nail is filed far less than with a full removal every time. It also tends to be quicker in the chair. The trade-off is that it needs an existing base in good condition — if there is widespread lifting or the previous work is damaged, a full off is the better route.

As a rough guide, most people come back for a fill-in every three to four weeks, around the point where the regrowth line becomes visible at the cuticle. Cuticle oil once or twice a day keeps the sidewalls flexible and helps prevent lifting at the edges. Avoid using your nails as tools, and wear gloves for washing up — hot water and detergent are the usual culprits behind early lifting.

Accent Design suits anyone who wants some artwork without committing every nail to it. It is a good option for travellers too: a couple of detailed nails read clearly in photos, and the quieter nails keep the set easy to wear with anything in your suitcase.

A Word from Mami

The interesting part of an accent set is deciding what the non-art nails do. They are not filler — they set the rhythm, and if they are too loud the accents stop being accents. I spent a good part of this appointment checking the hand at arm’s length rather than up close, which is how the set is actually seen.

Working in English with a guest whose first language is French is one of the nicer parts of this job. Neither of us was speaking our own language, and the design still landed exactly where we both wanted it.
