Sculpted Extensions on All Ten Nails | Full Design Custom Gel in Harajuku

About This Treatment

This set was done by our nailist Mami at lull. in Harajuku. The menu was Full Design Custom, with the removal handled as a fill-in rather than a full soak-off. Extensions were added to all ten nails as an option. The guest visited us from the United States.

Design Points

Building ten extensions in one sitting means the whole hand is designed as a set, not nail by nail. Mami worked on the length and the shape of each tip first, checking the line from the side and from above so that the ten nails read evenly when the hands are held together.

The base was rebuilt with the fill-in method. Instead of removing everything down to the natural nail, the grown-out portion is filed back and fresh gel is layered in, so the previous base stays as a foundation. This keeps the surface level and gives the custom art on top a flat, even canvas to sit on.

The Visit

Our guest was wonderfully easy to talk to, and the conversation kept going throughout the appointment. She had also brought chocolate with her as a gift for the salon, which was a lovely surprise for the team. When the set was finished, she looked genuinely pleased with how her hands turned out — always the best part of a long appointment.

Care and Styling Notes

A few things worth knowing if you are considering extensions or a fill-in:

  • Fill-in vs. full off. A fill-in keeps your existing base and only refreshes the regrowth area. It puts less stress on the natural nail than repeated filing-off, and it shortens the appointment compared with starting from zero each time. It works best when the current base is still in good condition.
  • Timing. Most people book their next fill-in around three to four weeks later, when the regrowth line starts to become visible. Leaving it much longer makes the base harder to save, and a full re-do may be needed instead.
  • Daily habits with extensions. Extended nails add leverage at the tip, so opening cans, peeling stickers, or digging through a bag with your nails is what usually causes lifting or a break. Use the pads of your fingers instead. Applying cuticle oil once a day keeps the surrounding skin flexible.
  • Who it suits. Extensions are a good fit if your natural nails are short, break easily, or if you want a specific shape that your own nail length can’t reach yet. They are also popular before a trip or an event, since the length and design are set from day one.

A Word from Mami

Ten extensions is a long appointment, and it goes much more smoothly when the guest is relaxed and chatting along the way — this one really did fly by. Thank you for the chocolate, too. It was shared with the rest of the team the same day. If you are visiting Tokyo and want length added rather than just color, do let me know at the booking stage so I can set aside enough time.
