About This Treatment
This was a fresh start on bare nails — no removal or gel replacement was needed, so the session began with prep on the natural nail surface.
Design Points
Full Design Light covers all ten nails with a designed finish, and here it was built directly on the guest’s own nail length. No extensions were added, so the shape and length stayed as they naturally were.
Working on bare nails has one practical advantage: the base sits flat and thin from the very first layer. That keeps the finished surface low-profile against the nail plate, which matters when the art runs across every finger rather than sitting on one or two accent nails.

The Visit
The guest had arrived from the US just one week earlier, in Tokyo as an exchange student. With months of everyday life in the city ahead, this was less of a one-off holiday manicure and more of a set to live in. She looked genuinely pleased when the last nail was finished and she saw all ten together.
Care and Style Notes
Gel applied on natural nails, without extensions, generally holds its look for around three to four weeks before regrowth at the base starts to show. A few habits help it get there:
- Apply cuticle oil once or twice a day. Dry skin around the base is what makes the edge of the gel lift first.
- Don’t peel or pick at a lifted corner. Peeling takes layers of the natural nail with it.
- Wear gloves for dishwashing and cleaning. Repeated hot water and detergent shorten the wear noticeably.
A full ten-nail design on natural length suits anyone who wants a complete, finished look without changing the shape of their hands — students, people starting a new job or a new life abroad, and anyone who types, cooks, or carries bags all day. It is also an easy option for a first gel appointment in Japan, since nothing has to be removed beforehand.
A Note from Mami
Designing all ten nails is a different job from designing one. Each nail is a slightly different width and curve, so the same motif reads differently on a thumb than on a little finger, and the balance has to be judged across the whole hand rather than nail by nail.
Nails you will see every day for months carry a bit more weight than nails for a weekend. That was on my mind throughout this one. If you are settling into Tokyo for a while, come back and we can change the design as the seasons shift.
