About This Treatment
Nailist in charge: Mami. Menu: Accent Design (up to 6 nails), applied to bare natural nails — no removal or re-application was needed. Option added: gel extensions on all ten nails. The guest visited lull. from the United States.
Design Highlights
The starting point was length. All ten nails were extended, so the shape and the line of each fingertip were built from scratch rather than adjusted from an existing set. With bare nails underneath, the base sits thin and flat against the natural nail, which keeps the extended length looking like a continuation of the finger instead of something stacked on top.
Art was then placed on six nails. Spreading a design across every finger can flatten the overall impression, so the remaining nails were finished more simply and act as breathing space. Seen from a distance, the hand reads as one coordinated set; up close, the detailed nails are the ones that hold your eye. Length also changes how a design sits — there is more surface to work with, so the art was positioned with the new nail shape in mind rather than scaled down from a short-nail layout.
The Visit
The guest came in as a couple during their trip to Japan.
She works as a massage therapist and has done so for seventeen years — a job where long nails simply aren’t an option. Extensions had been off the table for her day to day, so this was a rare chance to try the length she doesn’t normally get to wear. She looked genuinely pleased when the full set came together, turning her hands over to see the shape from different angles.
Travel is one of the few windows where that kind of change is possible, and it’s a request we hear often from guests whose work keeps their nails short.
Care and Style Notes
A few general points about gel extensions, for anyone considering the same menu.
How long they last: roughly three to four weeks is a common guide. As the natural nail grows, the gap at the base becomes visible, and that’s usually the signal to book a fill or a removal rather than waiting for a lift.
Daily handling: extensions add leverage at the fingertip, so the main thing is to stop using nails as tools — no opening cans, no prying lids, no picking at labels. Use the pad of the finger instead. If a corner does catch, don’t pull it; leave it to a salon.
Keeping them comfortable: cuticle oil once or twice a day keeps the skin around the base flexible and reduces the dry, tight feeling that can come with a new set. It also helps the surface stay glossy longer.
Who this suits: people who keep their nails short for work and want length for a trip or an event; anyone whose natural nails are soft or short and won’t hold a shape on their own; and anyone who wants art with real presence, since a longer nail plate gives a design more room to read clearly.
On removal: extensions are removed at a salon. Prying them off takes layers of the natural nail with them, so if you’re travelling and won’t be back, ask at booking about a removal appointment before you fly home.
A Note from Mami
With ten extensions, the work that decides the result happens before any art goes on. Each nail gets a slightly different length depending on the finger, and the side lines have to run straight, or the hand looks uneven no matter how good the design is. I check the whole set from the front and from the side several times while building, because a shape that looks fine on one finger can throw off the balance of the others.
Placing the art on six nails was about rhythm across the hand rather than decorating as much as possible. Choosing which nails carry the detail — and which ones don’t — is most of the decision.
It’s a pleasure when someone who can’t normally wear length gets to see their hands with it, even for a short while.
