About This Treatment
This set was created by our nailist Nami at lull. in Harajuku.
The menu was Accent Design (up to 6 nails), built on a full set of ten extensions. The guest came in with bare nails, so no removal was needed and the work started from a clean natural base. She was visiting Japan from the United States.
Design Points
Accent Design works on a simple idea: not every nail has to carry the same amount of art. Some nails hold the detail, the others stay quieter and let those stand out. With up to six nails available for art, there is room to spread the design across both hands rather than concentrating it on one or two fingers.
Because all ten nails were extended, length and shape were decided first. Extensions set the outline — the taper of the sidewalls, the length past the fingertip, the curve of the tip — and the art was placed onto that shape afterwards. Building on a bare nail also means the base sits flush from the start, with no old product underneath to work around, which keeps the surface even where the art sits.
The result reads as one set rather than ten separate nails. That balance is really what Accent Design is for.

Care and Styling Notes
Gel extensions generally hold their look for around three to four weeks. What ends the set is usually not the gel itself but natural nail growth — a visible gap appears at the base, and the balance of the design shifts outward as the nail grows.
A few habits that help:
- Cuticle oil, daily. The area where the extension meets the natural nail is where lifting starts. Keeping it flexible reduces that risk.
- Don’t use your nails as tools. Opening cans, peeling stickers off luggage, prying at packaging — extensions are strong, but leverage is what breaks them.
- Dry your hands properly. Water trapped under a lifted edge is the most common cause of an early problem.
- Never pull an extension off. If one lifts or chips, have it removed properly. Peeling takes layers of the natural nail with it.
Extensions suit anyone who wants length or a different nail shape without waiting for their own nails to grow — useful before a trip, a shoot, a wedding, or simply if your natural nails tend to break at a certain length. Pairing them with an accent-style design is a good option if you want something with presence but not full art on every finger.
If you’re travelling, it’s worth mentioning your plans. Long tapered shapes and heavy packing don’t always get along.
A Note from Nami
The interesting part of an accent set is deciding *which* nails do the work. It’s not simply alternating. You look at the hand as a whole, at which fingers are most visible when the hand is relaxed, and place the detail there so the design has a rhythm to it.
Starting from bare nails made that easier — the shape of the extensions could be planned from scratch rather than adapted to what was already there. She looked genuinely pleased with the finish, which is the part of the job that doesn’t get old.
