Design Points
The brief was short and clear: keep it simple. So the work went into shape and balance rather than decoration.
Two nails were extended to bring the overall length into line with the rest of the hand. When only a couple of nails are built out, the join at the free edge is where it either reads as natural or doesn’t — the thickness there was kept close to the natural nails so the silhouette stays even across all ten fingers.
The rest was finished in a pared-back way, letting the surface and the curve of the nail do the talking. Seen from a normal distance, the extended nails don’t announce themselves.

The Visit
She had landed in Japan that same day and came straight to Harajuku — nails before anything else on the itinerary.
She had also taken an exam the day before, and the pass notification had arrived. That news was still fresh while she was in the chair, and it showed. It’s a good mood to work in, and it suited the kind of clean, uncomplicated design she’d asked for.
Care and Style Notes
A few general points on this kind of gel-with-partial-extension work:
- How long it lasts. Gel typically holds around three to four weeks. With partial extensions, the limiting factor is usually growth at the cuticle rather than the extended tips themselves — as the natural nail grows out, the gap becomes visible.
- Everyday handling. Extended nails have more leverage, so avoid using the tips as tools — opening cans, prying lids, scratching at labels. Peeling gel off by hand takes layers of the natural nail with it; removal is best done properly.
- Travel-friendly. Cuticle oil once a day keeps the surrounding skin from drying out, which matters more than people expect during long flights and hotel air conditioning.
- Who it suits. Adding length to just one or two nails works well if you have a broken or shorter nail throwing off the balance of your hand, or if you want a little length without committing to a full set of extensions. A simple finish also travels well — it goes with whatever you packed.
Comment from Mami
Two extensions is a small number, but it’s the kind of job where the goal is for no one to notice the work. Matching two built nails to eight natural ones means matching curve and thickness, not just length. That’s the part I spent time on.
Coming to a nail salon on your very first day in the country is a nice way to start a trip. I hope the nails held up for the rest of it.
