About This Treatment
- Nailist: Mami
- Menu: Full Design Light
- Extensions: 10 nails
- Guest: visiting from the United States
The set was built on bare natural nails, so no removal was needed before starting. Extensions were applied to all ten fingers, then finished as one continuous design across both hands.
Design Points
The brief was short and clear: keep it simple, add sparkle, and work in a small accent.
Because all ten nails were extended, the first job was length and shape. Matching curve and edge line across both hands is what makes a “simple” set actually look simple — with extensions, uneven lengths are the thing the eye catches first, not the color.
From there, sparkle was used as the focal point rather than as full coverage. Concentrating shine in a limited area keeps the surface reading as clean and glassy at arm’s length, while still catching light when the hand moves. A wall-to-wall glitter finish would have pulled the design in a busier direction than requested, so the shine was kept placed and intentional.
The result sits in that useful middle ground: noticeable in photos, still easy to wear with anything in a suitcase.

The Visit
Our guest travelled in from Yuzawa specifically for the appointment — a decent trip to make for nails, and a nice reminder that Harajuku is worth the train ride.
She first came to Japan on her own at eighteen, and cooking is her thing. That came up while we were deciding on length, since anyone who spends real time with a knife and a pan has a practical relationship with their nails. It shaped how the set was finished.
She looked genuinely pleased with the hands at the end, which is the part of the job that doesn’t get old.
Care and Style Points
A few general notes on gel extensions, for anyone considering them:
- Wear time. Extensions on natural nails typically hold around three to four weeks. As the natural nail grows, the balance shifts and the base of the extension becomes more visible.
- Oil daily. Cuticle oil around the base keeps the natural nail flexible underneath. Dry nails lift more easily than oiled ones.
- Don’t use them as tools. Extensions add length, and length adds leverage. Opening cans, peeling stickers and prying lids are the most common causes of breakage.
- Around water and heat. Long soaking softens the seal over time. Drying hands properly after washing or cooking helps the edge stay sealed.
- Removal. Have them taken off professionally rather than peeling them. Peeling takes layers of the natural nail with it.
Extensions suit people whose natural nails are short, split, or slow to grow, and anyone who wants a specific shape immediately rather than in six months. For guests travelling, they’re also a practical choice — one appointment covers the whole trip. If your hands do a lot of hands-on work, ask for a moderate length; the design holds up just as well, and daily life is easier.
A Note from Mami
The tricky part of a “simple but sparkly” request is that the two words pull against each other. Add too much shine and it stops being simple; hold back too much and it stops being sparkly. I tend to solve that by deciding early where the light should sit, then leaving everything else quiet — that way the sparkle looks chosen rather than sprinkled.
Ten extensions in one sitting also means ten chances for the shapes to drift apart, so I check the hands together from a distance more than once during the build. It’s a small habit, but it’s what keeps a full set looking like a set.
