Koi and Water Lilies in Pink and Sage - nail design by lull., Harajuku Tokyo

Koi and Water Lilies in Pink and Sage | Hand-Painted Nail Art in Tokyo

About This Treatment

Nail artist Nami handled this appointment. The guest, visiting from the United States, chose our Full Design Custom menu on natural nails, with no removal or replacement needed. We also added ten extensions to build out the length before designing.

Design Points

Koi fish and water lilies are hand-painted across the set, alternating between a soft pink base and a sage green one. The koi are drawn in orange and white with fine brushwork, and the lilies are built up in low relief so they catch the light from the side.

Small clear domes are scattered over the surface like water droplets, which adds depth to the pond motif. Splitting the palette between pink and green means each hand reads slightly differently while the motif ties the whole set together.

The Visit

The appointment landed right before the guest’s birthday—the next day, in fact. Since the extensions were a priority, we scaled back the amount of art, but shaped what remained to feel a little special for the occasion. She left looking genuinely pleased with the result.

Care and Styling Notes

Extensions are a good option when you want extra length or a stronger canvas for design, especially if your natural nails are short. To keep them looking their best, a few habits help: avoid using your nails as tools, wear gloves for cleaning or dishwashing, and apply cuticle oil regularly to keep the surrounding skin healthy. A typical set holds up well for around three to four weeks, though this varies with your nail growth and daily routine. A pared-back design like this one suits anyone who wants noticeable length without heavy detailing—easy to wear day to day.

A Word from the Artist

Working around a birthday was a fun brief. Adding ten extensions meant rethinking the balance—more length, less surface art—so the challenge was making a simpler layout still feel worth celebrating. Choosing where to place the detail, rather than covering every nail, is what pulled it together. Sending a guest off with fresh nails the day before her birthday made it a nice one to work on.
