About This Treatment
Nailist: Mami Menu: One Color Applied directly onto bare natural nails, with no removal or replacement needed beforehand. The guest visiting us this time is from Russia.
Design Points
A single shade carried across all ten nails, laid down in thin, even layers so the surface reads flat and glossy from any angle.
The shaping took some care. On the index and middle fingers the free edge had broken, so there was a limit to how far the outline could be corrected. Rather than forcing a match, Mami filed those two nails to the cleanest shape the remaining nail plate allowed, then kept the sidewalls of the neighbouring nails in line with them so the hand looks balanced when the fingers are held together. The gel was floated slightly at the tip on the broken nails to soften the edge.
With one color, there is nowhere for unevenness to hide, so the cuticle line was kept tight and equally spaced on every finger.
About the Visit
Our guest is Russian and moved to Japan in her late teens, so the whole appointment ran in Japanese — she speaks it fluently, and the consultation about shape and length went back and forth easily.
She looked delighted when she checked her hands at the end of the session.
Care and Style Notes
One Color gel on natural nails usually holds up for around three to four weeks, at which point regrowth at the base starts to show. A few habits that help it last:
- Apply cuticle oil once or twice a day. Dry skin around the base is what makes lifting start.
- Open cans, boxes and packaging with your fingertips, not your nail edges.
- Wear gloves for dishwashing and cleaning where you can.
This menu also suits anyone whose nails have chipped or broken. A gel layer adds a little thickness over a weakened free edge, and while it cannot make a short nail long, it buys time while the nail grows out — after a few cycles the shape usually becomes much easier to even up.
It is a good choice if you want something that looks finished with no upkeep during a trip, or if you simply prefer a clean hand over detailed art.
A Note from Mami
When a nail has broken, the honest answer is that the shape has limits that day. What I can do is decide which outline the remaining nail will actually support, and then bring the other eight nails toward it instead of trying to drag the broken ones toward a shape they cannot hold. That usually looks better in photos and in real life than a forced correction.
Talking it through in Japanese made that part easy — we could agree on the length before I started filing, which saves a lot of guesswork.
