About This Treatment
This appointment was a Full Design Custom, handled by our nailist Mami. The guest was visiting from the United States. She came in with bare natural nails, so there was no removal or replacement of a previous set — the work started from scratch on all ten nails.
Design Points
Full Design Custom means the design is decided together at the chair rather than picked off a sample board. Each of the ten nails gets its own plan, so the set reads as one idea while every finger contributes something slightly different.
Starting from bare nails has a practical upside: the surface is even from the beginning. Mami shaped the free edge, tidied the cuticle line, and buffed the plate lightly before any gel went down, which lets the base sit flush against the nail with no lifted edge at the sidewalls. From there the design was built up in layers, curing between each one, and sealed with a top coat taken all the way to the edge.
About Her Visit
Our guest told us she is a fourth-generation Japanese American, in Japan on a trip from the US. The conversation ran the whole way through the appointment — she talked with us the entire time, and looked genuinely pleased when the last nail was cured and she saw the full set together.
Sessions like this are a good reminder of why we work in English at the chair. Deciding a design on the spot only works if both sides can talk freely about shape, length and colour direction as the work goes.
Care and Styling Notes
A full custom gel set on natural nails generally holds its look for around three to four weeks, depending on how fast your nails grow and how much you use your hands. Two things extend that in practice: cuticle oil once or twice a day to keep the skin around the nail from drying and pulling at the gel edge, and gloves for dishwashing and cleaning, since prolonged hot water is what usually starts a lift.
If a corner does catch, resist the urge to peel. Peeling takes the top layers of the natural nail with it. Come back for a proper removal instead — or if you are already home, have a local salon soak it off.
This menu suits anyone who has a rough idea rather than a fixed picture: a colour they like, a mood, a photo saved on their phone. It also works well for travellers, because a set applied on bare nails is the cleanest starting point and needs no extra removal time in the appointment.
A Word from Mami
Designing from a blank set of nails is the part of this job I look forward to most. Nothing is fixed at the start, so the direction can shift while we talk — a colour gets swapped, one accent nail changes completely — and the finished set ends up somewhere neither of us would have drawn on paper beforehand.
What I try to watch for is balance across both hands. A design can look great finger by finger and still feel unsettled when all ten are laid flat, so I keep checking the whole picture as I go rather than only at the end.
