About This Treatment
Design Points
Fill-in starts with the base that is already on the nail. Instead of taking everything off, Nami filed back the surface and the grown-out area, reshaped the free edge, and rebuilt the apex so the curve reads evenly from the side. The old colour layer stays underneath as a foundation, which keeps the finished thickness low even after art is added on top.
From there the design was built across all ten nails. Because the structure underneath was already settled, the top layer could be kept thin, and the art sits flush with the surface rather than raised above it. The cuticle line was worked right up to the skin, so there is no visible gap at the base on day one.

The Visit
Our guest came in with a strong sense of her own style, and the conversation moved easily from what she wanted on her nails to where she was travelling. She was clearly pleased with how the set came together, and before leaving she suggested that lull. should run a pop-up in London — an idea we are keeping in mind.
Care and Style Notes
Fill-in is the option for people who wear gel continuously. Rather than soaking off the entire layer every time, the technician removes only the lifted and grown-out portions and rebuilds from there, which means the natural nail plate is buffed far less often over a year of wear.
A few practical points:
- The usual cycle is around three to four weeks. Leaving it much longer increases lifting at the base, which makes the next fill-in harder to do cleanly.
- Fill-in suits nails that are in good condition with no significant lifting. If the previous set has widespread lifting or has been on for a long time, a full removal is the safer route.
- Apply cuticle oil daily. The regrowth area is where dryness shows first, and flexible skin at the base makes the next appointment more comfortable.
- Avoid using the nail edges as tools. A fill-in set keeps the original base layer, so impact at the tip is the most common cause of early chipping.
For visitors to Japan, a full-design set like this is easy to wear through the rest of a trip — no stones to catch on luggage handles, and the flat surface holds up to packing and unpacking.
Comment from Nami
The fun part of this appointment was that the styling conversation ran both ways. She had clear taste, so I could suggest something slightly outside the obvious and she took it immediately.
Technically, fill-in on a full-design set is mostly about judging the old layer. You have to read how much of it is still sound, take the rest back far enough that nothing lifts later, and then keep the new art thin enough that the nail does not end up bulky. Getting that balance right is what makes the set look like it was done from scratch.
And a pop-up in London — that suggestion stayed with me after she left.
