About This Treatment
This set was done by our nailist Nami at lull. in Harajuku. The guest, visiting from Austria, chose our Chrome menu. Her nails were bare on arrival, so no removal or rebalance was needed — the application started directly on her natural nails.
Design Points
Chrome is less about pattern and more about surface. A gel base is cured first, then chrome pigment is pressed and burnished onto it with an applicator until the powder turns from matte dust into a continuous reflective film. A top gel seals it, and the finish reads almost like polished metal rather than paint.
Because the shine depends on how flat the surface underneath is, prep matters more than usual here — any ripple in the base shows up as a wobble in the reflection. On short, natural-length nails the effect stays compact: the nails pick up the light and colour of whatever is around them, so the look shifts between indoors and daylight without any extra elements on top.

Guest Story
This was her very first nail appointment — ever. She came in with no prior gel experience, which made Chrome a fitting choice: one clean technique, nothing to manage, and an immediate visual payoff.
The conversation during the set wandered well beyond nails. We compared notes on the school systems in Austria and Japan, and talked politics for a while too. She left looking genuinely pleased with the result.
Care and Style Notes
A few general points about chrome gel, for anyone considering it:
- Wear time. Gel typically holds around three to four weeks. With chrome, what usually becomes noticeable first is the regrowth line at the cuticle, since the mirror surface draws the eye there.
- Protect the seal. Chrome pigment sits between layers of gel. Keep the free edge intact and avoid filing or picking at the tips — once the top layer is breached, the metallic layer can dull or lift.
- Daily habits. Gloves when using cleaning products or dish detergent help, and cuticle oil applied around the nail keeps the surrounding skin from drying out as the gel grows out.
- Removal. Have it removed professionally rather than peeling it off, especially on natural nails.
- Who it suits. Chrome works well on short nails and on first-timers. It looks deliberate without needing length or added elements, and it photographs strikingly — useful if you want something memorable from a trip without a long appointment.
A Word from Nami
First-time guests often expect nails to feel like a big commitment. Chrome is a good answer to that — the whole thing is one base, one pigment layer, one seal, and it is done. What I focus on with a first set is the prep: cuticle work and a level base, because chrome is unforgiving about anything uneven underneath.
Doing someone’s first set ever is its own kind of pressure, in a good way. Talking through school systems and politics across two countries made the time go quickly for both of us.
