About This Treatment
Nailist Mami handled this appointment at lull. in Harajuku. The menu was Full Design Light, and the previous gel was removed and rebuilt with a fill-in. The guest was visiting from the United States. No extensions were applied — the set was completed entirely on her natural nails.
Design Points
The core of this set was the color itself. Rather than picking a shade straight from the display, Mami mixed the gel to order, adjusting the tone against the guest’s skin until it read correctly on the hand.
Because a fill-in was used, only the lifted areas of the previous gel were removed and the sound base was kept in place. That means the new color sat on a thin, already-cured foundation, so the surface stayed low-profile and the free edge kept its original thickness. One nail had a break in it, and it was finished as it was, in its natural shape and length, rather than being rebuilt to match the others. The set reads as a full ten-finger color statement with slight variation in nail length across the hand.

The Visit
The guest works in a field where color is part of the job. That changed the way the color-mixing step went — instead of a quick approval, the shade was checked, discussed, and adjusted before anything went on the nail.
She also asked that the broken nail be left alone. No extension, no length correction. It’s a request we hear from guests who prefer to let a nail grow out on its own, and it’s completely workable within a Full Design Light. When the final shade was on, she looked genuinely pleased with it.
Care and Style Notes
A fill-in removes only the lifted or damaged portion of the existing gel and reuses the healthy base layer underneath. The main benefit is that the natural nail plate isn’t filed down from scratch every visit, which suits people who get their nails redone regularly. On the maintenance side, the usual cycle is around three to four weeks; leaving it much longer increases the chance of lifting at the cuticle line, which is exactly where a fill-in needs a clean edge to work well.
Custom-mixed color is worth considering if you’ve ever found a shade that looks right in the bottle but flat on your hand. Mixing lets the tone be tuned to skin undertone rather than the other way around. Keep in mind that a bespoke shade is blended in the moment, so if you love it, a photo in good daylight is the easiest way to reference it later.
For everyday upkeep, cuticle oil once or twice a day is the single most effective habit — it keeps the skin around the nail flexible and reduces the small chips and lifts that start at the edges. Gloves for dishes and cleaning help too, especially with hot water.
Leaving a broken or short nail as it is, instead of extending it, is a valid choice. A well-matched color across ten fingers pulls the hand together visually, so mismatched lengths become far less noticeable than most people expect.
From Mami
I’ll be honest — I was nervous mixing this one. Knowing the guest handles color professionally, I second-guessed the first blend, and the second. I remade the shade a few times before it looked right against her hand, and I’m glad I didn’t stop at “close enough.”
Working over a fill-in also meant the base had almost no room for error; a custom shade shows every unevenness underneath. Getting the tone and the surface to land together was the real work of this appointment. Her reaction at the end made the extra rounds of mixing worth it.
