One Extended Nail and a Fill-In Base | Full Design Custom Nails in Harajuku

About This Treatment

This set was created by our nailist Mami at lull. in Harajuku.

The menu was Full Design Custom, with the previous gel removed by the fill-in method rather than a full off. One nail was lengthened with an extension as part of the same appointment.

The client was visiting from Mexico.

Design Points

Full Design Custom is the menu with the widest range of freedom at lull. — the art is built nail by nail, so each finger can carry its own idea while the ten nails still read as one set.

The base was prepared with a fill-in. Instead of stripping everything back to the natural nail, only the lifted and grown-out portion is filed away, and the healthy hardened layer underneath stays in place. That layer acts as a cushion, so the surface can be rebuilt and re-shaped without repeated stress on the nail plate.

One nail was extended. Adding length to a single finger is a small adjustment that does a lot of work: it evens out the silhouette when one nail is shorter than the rest, and it gives the design a consistent canvas from thumb to little finger.

A Note From the Visit

Our guest came to us from Mexico and moved easily between Spanish and English during the appointment. The consultation ran in English from start to finish, and she looked genuinely pleased when the finished set was in front of her.

Harajuku brings us visitors from all over the world, and conversations like this one are part of why we keep the whole booking-to-finish process available in English.

Care and Style Notes

How long it lasts. A fill-in set is generally good for around three to four weeks, depending on how fast your nails grow and how you use your hands. Rebooking at that interval means the next fill-in stays shallow and quick.

Who fill-in suits. It’s a good fit if you get gel done regularly and want to reduce how often your natural nail is filed down. It’s less suitable if the existing gel has lifted extensively or if you want a completely different base structure — in those cases a full off is the cleaner route.

Living with an extension. An extended nail has a longer lever, so it takes more force at the tip. Open cans and packaging with the pad of your finger instead of the nail edge, and pull zips with your fingertip rather than hooking the nail under. If you travel with large luggage, be mindful when lifting by a handle.

Daily upkeep. Cuticle oil once or twice a day is the simplest thing that helps. It keeps the surrounding skin flexible, which reduces the small catches and snags that start lifting at the edges. Dry cabin air on long flights makes this worth doing on travel days too.

Comment From the Nailist

From Mami:

Fill-in appointments have a rhythm of their own. Most of the focus goes into reading the existing base — where it’s still solid, where it needs to come off — before any art begins. Get that judgement right and the new design sits flat and even; rush it and you can see the difference in the surface.

Adding the one extension in the same session meant matching that nail to the others in thickness and curve, not just in length. That’s the detail I spent the most time on here.

It was a pleasure working in English with a guest who switches between languages so comfortably. Thank you for choosing lull. during your time in Tokyo.
