About This Treatment
Nailist: Mami Menu: Accent Design (up to 6 nails) Starting condition: bare natural nails, so no removal was needed before the base went on. The guest visited our Harajuku studio from the United States.
Design Points
Accent Design means the art is concentrated on a limited number of nails — up to six — while the rest of the set stays quiet. The eye lands where you want it to, and the hand still reads as one set rather than ten separate paintings.
Because we started from bare nails, the base went directly onto the natural nail plate with no old gel underneath. That keeps the total thickness low and lets the colour sit flat and true, without the slight cloudiness that can come from layering over an existing set. The shaping and length followed her own natural nails, with no extensions added, so the finish stays close to the hand’s natural proportions.

A Note From the Visit
Our guest came in from the US and shared that she’s a medical student, and that she has Chinese heritage alongside her American background. She smiled through most of the appointment and looked genuinely pleased when she checked her hands under the light at the end — that kind of reaction is the clearest feedback we get.
Care and Styling Notes
A few practical things about accent-style gel on natural nails:
- Wear time. Gel on bare natural nails generally holds around three to four weeks, depending on how fast your nails grow and how much you use your hands. Regrowth at the cuticle line usually becomes visible before the gel itself starts to lift.
- Daily care. Cuticle oil once a day keeps the skin around the nail from drying out, which also helps the edges of the gel stay sealed. Gloves for dishwashing and cleaning make a noticeable difference.
- If an edge lifts. Don’t peel or pick it. Peeling takes thin layers of the natural nail with it. Come in for a proper removal instead.
- Who it suits. Accent Design works well if you want something with clear personality but not on every finger — useful for study, clinical placements, office environments, or anyone who prefers a set that doesn’t shout. It’s also a sensible choice for travellers, since a limited number of art nails takes less chair time than a full set.
Comment From Your Nailist
Mami: “With accent work, the decision that matters most is which nails carry the art. Put it in the wrong place and the design fights the hand instead of sitting on it. I usually look at how the fingers fall naturally when the hand relaxes, then build outward from there. Starting on bare nails made that easier — no old layers to correct around, so I could keep everything thin and let the art be the thickest part of the set. It was a good appointment to work on.”
