lull. is an English-friendly nail salon in Harajuku, Tokyo, and this set was completed in a single sitting including the fill-in work on the existing base.

Design Highlights

Chrome is a powder, not a polish. It’s burnished onto a cured gel base until the surface turns reflective, then sealed with a top coat. That means the finish only looks as good as the layer underneath it — any ripple or uneven curve shows up immediately in the reflection.

Here the nails were kept short and close to the natural nail shape, so the mirrored surface sits in a compact, rounded plane. Short chrome behaves differently from long chrome: instead of a long streak of light running down the nail, you get a tight, concentrated highlight that shifts as the hand moves. The free edges were capped and sealed so the shine carries all the way to the tip rather than stopping short.

The fill-in approach meant the existing base was reshaped and refilled rather than fully stripped, keeping the surface level before the chrome went on.

Behind the Visit

Our guest works as a gym trainer, and asked for a short length from the start — practical for hands that are in constant use through the day. Chrome gave her the impact she wanted without adding any length at all. She looked genuinely pleased with how they turned out.

Care and Style Notes

A few things worth knowing if you’re considering chrome or a fill-in:

  • Chrome needs its top coat intact. The metallic layer is thin, so once the sealing top coat wears through, the shine dulls in that spot. Avoid using your nails as tools, and reapply hand cream around the cuticle rather than scrubbing at the surface.
  • Expect roughly three to four weeks. As with most gel, the visible change is regrowth at the base rather than chipping, especially on short nails where there’s less leverage on the free edge.
  • Fill-in reduces repeated filing. Instead of removing everything down to the natural nail each time, the base layer is kept and only the grown-out area is refilled. It’s a good option for people coming in regularly.
  • Short chrome suits active hands. Training, typing, lifting, handling equipment — a short length holds up better through all of it, and chrome still reads as a statement colour even at a few millimetres.

Chrome also photographs very differently depending on lighting, which is worth keeping in mind if you’re picking a set for a trip.

A Note from Mami

With a short set, there’s less surface to work with, so the prep matters more than usual. I spent extra time levelling the base after the fill-in — on a mirror finish, a slightly low spot near the cuticle reads as a dark line, and there’s nowhere to hide it. Getting the chrome to wrap cleanly over the curve at the tip is the part I always slow down for.

Short nails and chrome are a combination I’d happily recommend more often. It’s low-maintenance in terms of length but still catches the light every time you move your hands.
