Six Accent Nails on a Fill-In Base | Gel Nail Art in Harajuku

About This Treatment

This set was done by Mami at lull. in Harajuku.

The menu was Accent Design (up to 6 nails), with a fill-in used for the removal and rebalance step instead of a full soak-off. The guest was visiting from Australia.

Design Points

Accent Design works by choosing a limited number of nails to carry the detail, then letting the remaining nails sit quietly around them. With up to six nails available for artwork, there is room to place accents across both hands rather than crowding them onto one, so the balance still reads well when the hands are side by side.

The fill-in method matters to how it looks, too. The existing base layer stays on the nail, and only the grown-out and surface areas are reshaped before the new colour and art go on. Because the foundation is already level, the new accents sit flush with the surrounding nails and the whole set keeps a thin, even profile rather than building up thickness at the cuticle line.

A Note from the Visit

Our guest is a cabin crew member, in Japan for a three-week stay, and the conversation ran non-stop from start to finish — easily one of the chattiest, most easy-going appointments of the week. She looked genuinely pleased with the finish when she checked her hands at the end.

Care and Style Tips

A few general notes on this kind of set:

  • Fill-in vs. full removal. A fill-in keeps the existing base on the nail, so the nail plate isn’t filed down again at every visit. It’s a good option for people who get gel done regularly and want to reduce repeated wear on the natural nail.
  • Timing. Most gel sets look their best for around three to four weeks, with the grown-out area at the cuticle becoming the first noticeable change. Booking a rebalance around that point keeps the surface even.
  • Daily care. Cuticle oil once a day and gloves for dishwashing and cleaning go a long way. Avoid using nails as tools — opening cans and picking at labels is what usually lifts an edge first.
  • Who it suits. Accent designs work well if you want visible nail art without every nail being busy. That makes them practical for anyone with grooming standards at work, and for travellers who want something that photographs nicely but still feels wearable for the rest of a trip.

A Comment from Mami

Some appointments are quiet and focused; this one was the opposite, and I enjoyed it. We talked the whole way through, which honestly makes the detailing pass easier — the hands stay relaxed when someone isn’t thinking about holding still.

With a three-week stay ahead, timing was on our side: a fill-in set placed at the start of a trip like that will still be in good shape by the time she flies home.
