About This Treatment
This appointment was handled by Nami at lull. in Harajuku. The menu was Full Design Light, which included removal of the client’s existing soft gel before the new set was applied. The client was visiting from the United Kingdom.
Design Points
The session started with taking the previous soft gel off. Soft gel comes away with remover rather than heavy filing, so most of the work here is patience: soaking, lifting the softened layers off gently, then evening out the nail surface so nothing catches underfoot of the new gel.
With a clean base, the new design was built across all ten nails. Each layer was cured thinly rather than in one thick coat, which keeps the surface flat and the shine even from cuticle to free edge. The finish sits close to the nail plate, so the set feels light on the hands — useful when you are out walking a city all day.

Her Visit
She came to us from the UK, originally from the United States, and Japan’s humidity had clearly caught her off guard. It came up more than once during the appointment, and it is a fair reaction — the air in Tokyo in September is nothing like a British summer.
The upside is that gel does not mind the weather. Unlike hair or natural nails, a cured gel surface stays exactly as it is whether the air is dry or heavy. She looked genuinely pleased with the finished set when she checked it in the light before heading out.
Care and Styling Notes
A few general notes on this kind of service, for anyone considering it:
- After removal, the natural nail is thirsty. Cuticle oil once a day, especially around the sides and base, helps the skin recover from the remover.
- Typical wear time for a full gel set is around three to four weeks, depending on how fast your nails grow and how much you use your hands. Regrowth at the base is usually what makes it look ready for a refill, not the gel failing.
- Avoid using your nails as tools. Opening cans and peeling labels are the two most common ways an edge lifts early.
- If a corner does lift, leave it alone. Picking pulls up layers of the natural nail with it. Any salon can file it down safely.
- Who it suits: travellers who want one appointment to cover both taking off an old set and leaving with a new one, and anyone who prefers a finish that looks done but does not add bulk to the nail.
A Word from Nami
Back-to-back removal and a new full set is one of my favourite appointment types, because you see the whole arc in one sitting — tired gel off, bare nail reset, fresh design on. The removal stage is where the quality of the next set is decided, so I take my time there rather than rushing to the fun part.
Talking about the weather with her was a good reminder of something I take for granted. Tokyo humidity is just the background of my day, and to someone arriving from the UK it is a genuine shock. If you are visiting in the warmer months, gel is honestly the low-maintenance choice for your hands.
