This set started from bare nails, so there was no removal step beforehand. All ten nails were extended, then finished with a Full Design Light application across the full set.
Design Points
Building from a bare nail means the shape is decided from zero. Mami set the length and the curve of each tip first, then checked the ten nails side by side so the silhouette stayed even from thumb to pinky.
Once the base was settled, the Full Design Light art went on every nail rather than a few accent fingers. With extensions, the extra surface area gives the design more room to breathe — patterns sit flatter and cleaner than they would on a short natural nail. The apex of each extension was kept low so the set looks slim from above while still holding its strength.
Her Visit
She came to Japan at 22 on a trip to celebrate her graduation, and stopped by our Harajuku studio during the trip. Getting a fresh set of extensions before the rest of her travels made sense — photos, shopping, and a lot of walking around Tokyo were still ahead. She looked genuinely pleased when the last nail was finished and she saw the full set together.
Care and Style Notes
Gel extensions generally hold for around three to four weeks, depending on how fast your natural nails grow and how you use your hands. A few things help them last:
- Apply cuticle oil once or twice a day. Dry skin around the base is where lifting usually starts.
- Don’t use the tips as tools — opening cans or peeling stickers puts stress right at the stress point.
- Dry your hands properly after washing, especially under the free edge.
- If a nail catches or lifts, have it removed by a nail technician rather than pulling it off. Peeling takes layers of the natural nail with it.
Extensions suit people who want length and shape that their natural nails can’t give yet, or who want a full set of art with enough surface for the design to read clearly. They’re also a practical choice before a trip, since one appointment covers you for several weeks with no maintenance in between. If you’re travelling onward and won’t be back in Tokyo, ask your technician at home for a soak-off removal rather than waiting for them to grow out.
A Note from Mami
Ten extensions from bare nails is a session where the first half decides everything. If the lengths aren’t matched before the art starts, no amount of detail later will fix it, so I spend the time at that stage and keep checking the hand from different angles.
She was on a graduation trip, so this set was going to be in a lot of her photos from Japan. That changed how I thought about the balance — I wanted it to read well from a distance and in a phone camera, not only up close. English is fine with us, so she could tell me what she wanted as we went.
