About This Treatment
Nailist: Nami. Menu: Full Design Light, with the previous gel taken down by fill-in rather than a full removal. Two nails were extended during the session. The guest was visiting from the UK.
Design Highlights
The starting point was the existing base layer. With fill-in, only the color and top layers are filed away, and the hardened base that is still bonded well to the nail stays in place. That base then works as the foundation for the new set, so the structure carries over instead of starting from zero.
Two nails were extended to bring the free-edge line into agreement with the rest of the hand. Extensions like these are built out from the natural nail, then filed down so the join sits flush — the aim is a length line that reads as one continuous curve across all ten nails rather than two nails that announce themselves. Once the shape was settled, the full design was applied across the whole set, with the surface leveled so light travels evenly over each nail.
Story from the Visit
Our guest works as a fashion influencer in Germany, with an audience of around 400,000. Conversation flowed easily through the whole appointment — a rare treat when you are filing and building at the same time — and she looked genuinely pleased when she saw the finished hands under the lamp.
Care and Styling Notes
A few practical notes on this kind of set:
- Maintenance cycle. Gel with a fill-in base is usually revisited every three to four weeks. The visual cue is the growth gap at the cuticle rather than the condition of the color.
- Why fill-in suits repeat visits. Because the bonded base is not stripped off each time, the surface of the natural nail is disturbed less than with repeated full removals. It tends to suit people who wear gel continuously rather than on and off.
- Extensions. Extended nails sit slightly further from the fingertip, so they catch on things more easily — zips, car doors, suitcase handles. Push and pull with the pads of your fingers, not the tips.
- Daily care. Cuticle oil once a day keeps the sidewalls flexible. If a nail does lift at the edge, leave it alone and have it seen to, rather than peeling or trimming it yourself.
- Who it suits. A full design with a couple of extensions is a good fit if your nails differ in length or shape from finger to finger, or if you want a set that photographs consistently across the whole hand.
A Word from Your Nailist
Nami: “With fill-in, most of the decision-making happens before any color goes on. I check each nail to see how much of the old base is still holding, remove what has to go, and keep the rest. On this set, the fun part was the two extensions — getting the thickness at the join thin enough that you cannot feel the step when you run a finger over it, while still leaving enough structure to take everyday knocks. Once that groundwork is even, the design sits flat and behaves itself.”
