About This Treatment
The menu for this visit was One Color, booked together with a soak-off and rebalance for existing soft gel. The nail artist in charge was Nami. Our guest travelled to Harajuku from London, United Kingdom, and was seen in English throughout the appointment.
Design Highlights
One Color looks simple on paper, but almost everything about it comes down to how the surface is built. The previous soft gel was removed first, so the plate could be re-checked and re-shaped from a clean starting point rather than being covered over.
From there, Nami worked in thin layers instead of one heavy coat. Thin layers cure more evenly and keep the colour from pooling at the sidewalls. The line along the cuticle was kept narrow and parallel to the natural curve — with a single shade covering the whole nail, that one line is what the eye reads first. A slight apex was built through the centre of each nail for balance, then finished with a high-gloss top so the shade reflects light in one continuous sweep rather than in patches.
A Visit From London
Our guest came in during a family trip to Japan. She used to run her own salon in London and is currently involved in several businesses, so the conversation naturally turned to the industry — how gel products differ between the UK and Japan, and how appointment styles vary between the two markets. Being able to talk shop with someone who has stood on the other side of the table is not something that happens every day at the desk.
She looked genuinely pleased with the finish when it was done.
Care and Styling Notes
A few practical points about single-colour soft gel:
- Wear time. Soft gel in one shade generally holds around three to four weeks. Growth at the cuticle becomes visible before the colour itself wears out, which is usually what decides the timing of the next visit.
- Daily care. Cuticle oil once or twice a day keeps the skin around the nail flexible and reduces lifting at the edges. Gloves for dishwashing and cleaning help, since prolonged hot water is one of the main causes of early separation.
- Never peel. Picking a lifted edge takes layers of the natural nail with it. A proper soak-off at a salon is always the safer route.
- Who it suits. One Color is a good fit for anyone who wants nails that read as tidy in every setting — work, travel photos, dinner — without needing thought each morning. It is also the most travel-friendly option we offer, since there is no art to chip unevenly during a long trip.
Comment from Nami
Rebalancing gel for someone who has removed gel professionally herself is a slightly different kind of appointment. There is no need to explain why the soak-off is being taken slowly, or why the colour is going on in two thin coats — she already knew. What I focused on instead was the shape: matching the free edge to what she was already wearing, so the change would look like a continuation rather than a reset. Hearing her reaction at the end, from someone who has looked at thousands of finished hands, meant something.
