About This Treatment
This set was created by our nail artist Nami at lull. in Harajuku. The guest, visiting from the United States, chose Full Design Light, with removal of her existing soft gel before the new design was applied.
The menu was switched on the day of the appointment. She originally came in for a fuller design plan, and moved to the Light option after talking through what she wanted with Nami.
Design Highlights
Because the previous soft gel was removed first, the surface was reset completely flat before building. That matters more than it sounds: any ridge left from an old layer shows through a light design, where there’s less artwork on top to hide it.
Nami worked in thin, evenly cured layers so the finished set stayed slim on the nail. The design sits close to the natural nail shape rather than adding bulk, which is what keeps a “light” set from looking like a scaled-down version of something bigger.
Her Visit
She arrived with an idea she couldn’t quite put into words — a general mood, a rough direction, no fixed reference image. That’s a common starting point, and it’s usually the most interesting one to work from.
Nami talked it through with her, narrowing the vague parts down into concrete choices: how much of the nail to cover, where to place the focal point, how far to push it. The Light menu turned out to suit that direction better than the original plan, so they changed it.
Seeing the idea in her head actually appear on her nails clearly made her day. She was visibly pleased with how it came out.
Care and Styling Notes
A few general points about soft gel and design sets like this one:
- Wear time. Soft gel typically holds around three to four weeks before the regrowth line becomes noticeable. Design-heavy nails don’t wear out faster, but the grown-out edge tends to show earlier on light, open designs where the nail plate is more visible.
- Removal. Soft gel is designed to be removed with remover, not lifted or picked off. Peeling it away takes surface layers of the natural nail with it. If you’re traveling and won’t be back, any salon that handles soft gel can take it off.
- Daily habits. Cuticle oil once a day keeps the edges from drying out and lifting. Wearing gloves for dishes and cleaning helps more than most people expect.
- Who it suits. A Light design works well if you want art on all ten nails but prefer a finish that stays quiet — good for travel, for wearing back to work, and for anyone who isn’t sure yet what they want and would rather start somewhere restrained.
A Word from Nami
Sessions that start without a reference photo are the ones where the consultation does the real work. Instead of matching an image, you’re translating — turning “something like this, kind of soft” into a specific plan for ten nails.
The switch to the Light menu wasn’t a downgrade. Once we mapped out what she actually wanted, the lighter layout gave the idea more room to read clearly. Less on the nail, more of the idea visible.
If you come in with only a vague direction, that’s genuinely fine. Bring the mood and we’ll find the shape together.
