About This Treatment

Design Highlights

Full Design Custom means the artwork is planned from scratch at the table rather than picked from a set catalogue, so every nail can carry its own detail while still reading as one set across both hands.

The base was prepared with a fill-in instead of a full removal. The existing gel foundation stays in place, the grown-out area is refined, and the surface is re-leveled before any art goes on. That keeps the length and shape the guest already had, and it gives the new design a flat, even canvas — which matters when fine linework or layered color sits on top.

Because the base was carried over, more of the appointment time went into the design itself rather than starting from bare nails.

A Visit to Harajuku from New York

Our guest came to us from New York — a Korean American visitor with a very sharp sense of style, which showed in how clearly she could talk through what she wanted for the set. She looked genuinely pleased when it was finished.

Harajuku tends to work well for travelers in that way: you can fit a nail appointment between Takeshita Street, Cat Street and a coffee stop, and walk out with something you’ll be photographing for the rest of the trip.

Care and Style Notes

A fill-in (infill) is the maintenance route for anyone who wears gel continuously. Instead of filing the whole thing off each time, the artist removes only the lifted or grown-out portion, reshapes the free edge, and rebuilds the balance of the nail. Two practical upsides: less repeated filing of the natural nail plate, and a shorter turnaround at the start of the appointment.

General guidance we give for gel worn this way:

  • Plan the next visit around the three-to-four week mark. Past that, the regrowth line gets deep enough that a full reset is often the cleaner option.
  • Apply cuticle oil once or twice a day. Gel itself doesn’t dry out, but the skin and the free edge around it do, and that’s where lifting usually starts.
  • Wear gloves for dish soap and cleaning products, and avoid using your nails as tools — most mid-cycle chips come from catching an edge, not from the gel failing.
  • If a corner lifts, don’t pick at it. Picking pulls up the natural nail layers underneath and makes the next fill-in harder.

Fill-in suits people who keep gel on year-round and want to protect the natural nail underneath. For a full design like this one, it also means the art doesn’t have to be rushed to make room for rebuilding the base.

Travelers should know that a fill-in can be done on gel applied elsewhere, as long as the existing product is in sound condition — worth mentioning when you book.

A Word from Mami

Guests who arrive with a strong personal style usually make the design process faster, not slower. This one was a good example: we settled the direction quickly, so the time went where it should — into the art across all ten nails rather than into deciding what to do.

Working on a fill-in base also changes how I approach the design. I know exactly what’s underneath and how it will wear, so I can commit to detail without worrying about the foundation shifting.
